ABOUT THE MISSION
Together, we are building more than libraries. We are building futures.
Libraries for Zimbabwe began with a simple belief: every child deserves access to books, literacy, and the opportunity to dream about their future.
A mission born from witnessing a real need.
OUR STORY
After traveling to Zimbabwe and witnessing firsthand the challenges many students face in accessing books and educational resources, it became clear that libraries could help create lasting change within schools and communities. In many areas, students are eager to learn but have little or no access to books, library spaces, or literacy resources that many children around the world often take for granted.
What started as a desire to help quickly grew into a larger mission fueled by students, schools, educators, families, and community members who wanted to make a difference.
Educator, librarian, author, and founder.
Heather McCarthy
Heather McCarthy is an educator, librarian, children’s author, and founder of Libraries for Zimbabwe, a mission dedicated to expanding access to books, literacy, and learning opportunities for students in Zimbabwe.
Inspired by the work of Dr. Tererai Trent and the Tinogona Foundation, Heather traveled to Zimbabwe and witnessed firsthand the importance of access to books and educational resources within school communities.
These libraries are more than buildings filled with books.
They become spaces where students discover new ideas, strengthen literacy skills, build confidence, and imagine possibilities for their future.
